Because of the greatness of the great thinkers and leaders turned back to their grow up and also their genetic make-up and their growth up is the a big incentive , so people great their work , and pope Shenouda one of the greatest of this era of decades 20 and 2 first in the whole world , and he titled with the pope of Arabs and he was the patriarch number 117 , but the first was saint Mark “ the apostle of the Christ to the land of Egypt , and the one of the writers of the holy bibles , his name is a Coptic word means “ the son of God” his growth up .

He was born in Upper Egypt in Salam village Asuit government in 3 August 1923 with the name of Nazeer Gayed Rofael
and after he finished his secondary studying.


He attended to Cairo University and he continued his studying in the faculty of Arts  and graduated from it and had got BA of Arts , history department in 1947 , in the same year he also graduated from the school of Infantry for reserve officers and he was the first in it and worked as an English teacher , during his working , he was assiduous teacher  upon his nightly studying in the seminary faculty in Cairo and had got diploma of the theological from the seminary faculty in 1949 hisservice.


During his service in the seminary faculty, he was Struggled and fought for the rights of the seminary and the result of it was moving the seminary to it’s place now in the land of saint Rawes where was built a special buildings and outsourcing with many places in this area , after it was a small building in the area of ( Mahmasha ) and support the endowment of education with scientific experiences from the researchers teachers in different fields , also in custody increased financial provision for exchange by the Parish Council , and Nazeer Gayed started his service in the field of Sunday school in 1939 in the church of saint Mary in (Mahmasha) which was the church of seminary faculty in this time and it was in the play ground in the faculty .

In 1940-1941 sat up a branch for the Sunday school in the association of faith in Shoubra and according to his strong active , the archdeacon Habib Girgis joined him to the higher committee of Sunday school , his famous in the service was crowned in the field of youth in the church of saint Antony in shoubra , he was tactful speaker, so the new young was gathered around his service and attracted them to the spiritually which filled the holy bible and the meeting of youth in this church was very crowded with youth and servers every Sunday  night and the success of his service , the youth in his church there was only people who attended his meeting but also the youth that came from different areas coming from far areas and carried   hardship of the travel to hear and have a benefit from the talent of the holy spirit which was given to this youth , then Nazeer Gayed filled every place with guidance and education and the education and guidance of youth was the special talent for him , then he reached to be the honest person for Sunday school in the church of saint Antony , and caring with the new generation , because it’s like a plant of the lord in his field , and he was going to many branches to preach in their meetings with the words of the holy spirit ,


and he had a special class of secondary school in Sunday school in the church of  saint Mary in Rod – El- Farag , and another class for students of university in Sunday school house , and class for the servants in the church of saint Antony , he was teaching in different time and different places of the week  , and also solved the problems of youth with the guidance of the holy spirit , and also was called to preach in the studying of servants and participating in preparing and preaching the sermons and words in the conference of Sunday school in the territories Nazeer Gayed was Tactful , and also appeared a another talent for him , it’s the writing and poetry and vowed all his talents for the serving of God Jesus Christ and  all his life for Jesus the one who love , and his talent appeared through his writings in Sunday school magazine , and he started with a great poem with an address of “ the doors of hell” and in it was showed  , the great of christen church which cared by Christ and how much suffered from , and pains from inside and outside , because we had a promise from God that the doors of hell didn’t strength upon it , and after2 years from the edition of Sunday school magazine , was carried  the responsibility of it’s management , and in it express about his hopes and  the hope of the new generation of youth in the future of Coptic church in the 20 th  , so he started to draw the Coptic thinking and affected in it , and  it ‘s opinion and thinking was built many people , and wrote in all fields of society of Coptic church and it’s problems , and he was writing in the Sunday school magazine from it’s issuing many different  articles , so he wrote about the spirit life and studying of the holy bible and repairing the church and problem’s youth and wrote four long articles to answer upon the   Jehovah witnesses  then it became later a big search about Christ theological , and also wrote many of Poems which became later Spiritual hymns which sung with it the Coptic people , the most strange and spiritual articles were topics about Launch of the soul, always he was writing them when he came back from his nook  with monastery , he always went to saurian monastery and spent in it many long periods  for worshipping and praying , and these groups of articles were  the last articles he wrote , then after that he couldn’t resist the strong love in his heart for Jesus Christ the lord and followed him and went to the monastery and became a monk there , specifically  the last article which was written by him in the Sunday school magazine which carried a title of “I wished I had stayed there” and other verses "o tourists” then he went out to the monastery and ordained a monk in 18 of July 1954 with the name of Antony and he was 31 years old

Pope Gobrial VII

Life of Pope Gobrial VII


They called him Ebn Mehana, from Manshia Abo Aysha near El Moharaq monastery, his dad was hegeman Girgis Rafael, St. Marqurious church servant in Cairo. He was a monk at El Sorian monastery by the name of Rafael.

The thrown of Saint Mark was vacant for one year and eight months, the bishops and church leaders choose father Rafael to become the new Pope.


Father Rafael the monk became Pope Gobrial VII, pope (95) on the blessed Sunday 4th of Babah, 1242 for martyrs, which equivalent to October 1st, 1525 AC. During the time of Sultan El Mozfer Sliman Ebn Othman, and the governor of Egypt Ahmad Basha.


This Pope spared no effort to rebuilt the eastern monasteries such as Anba Antonious and anba Paula monasteries at El Araba also El Maymon monastery and other church buildings.


He also rebuilt the guest building, fence and cells at El Moharq monastery. They accused him of collecting monies for himself but the truth is to help with rebuilding the churches and monasteries.

Anba Paula’s monastry’s destroyed during his time by the Bany Atya Arabs, which they hung a monk there and stool all belongs, all monks ran away which made the pope very sad and due to his great love of rebuilding the monasteries to took on himself to rebuild it.

The congregation respected and loved him.

When King David II passed away on September 2nd, 1540 AD, which who was the reason for separation between Ethiopian and Egyptian churches. His blessed son Ekladious or Sagad El Awal became the king of Ethiopia on 1540 AD.
The first thing that king did is eliminated the Portuguese defective pope power Yoaz Barmodz, he asked him to leave the county, but if he want to stay he can be only a guest, while all the country will follow the mother Coptic church and the pope of Alexandria.

The king requested from Pope Gobrial VII to ordain metropolitan (Bishop), the pope choose a man by the name of Youssef and called him Youssab III on 1547 AD.
After the ordination in Egypt he went back to Ethiopia, meet the king and a good relationship started between the two churches after eighty years of hardship. The other defected pope return back to his country and was there till he died.
King Ekladious was brave all his live, when he went to defend his country from the Moslems, most of his army left him except twenty solders and 18 Portuguese solders, finally they arrested him and beheaded him. He was hanged for three years until an Armenian merchant bought him and buried him with respect.


When the king of Constantinople John 8th gave up on the unity between the Romans and Latin with roman pope, he tried with the Coptic Church since he realized the suffering from Moslems, he sent messenger to pope Gobrial offering the unity and protection. The pope kindly refused the offer.

There were two roman priests in Ethiopia, so the king asked the pope to talk to the king not to harm them, but they were bad and sent a letter to bishop of Rome that only way for unity is by force. The Roman bishop requested them to return, the mission failed.


He was a pope for forty three years and twenty five days; he reposed in Christ on Tuesday 29th of Babah 1285 Coptic year, which equal to October 26, 1568 AD. The reason for his death was the fine imposed by Sultan on Christian and Jews due to the incoming war, the pope left sad to anba Antonious monastery, when he arrived to the boat he passed away.


The monastery of anba Antonious commemorated that event on the saint Anthony’s church wall, below Saint Anthony and saint Paul’s Icon saying” at the blessed Tuesday d9th of Babah the year 1285 for martyrs, pope Gobrial the ninty five among popes reposed. There were a number of monastery monks near him at the sea shore. They transported his body to Cairo on 25th of Hator at the same year,  the funeral took place at Saint Marqorious church where he was buried inside a new tomb, under Saint Marqorious relic. Eighty five Bishop and priest attended the prayer and large number of peoples….”

Pope Gobrial VII was tall with a strong body and the holly spirit was upon him, he used to fast and pray a lot. He rebuilt several monasteries such as Saint Anthony and Saint Paul at the red sea, also Saint Anthony monastery known as El Gemiza.


May the Lord repose his soul in the possum of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Amen
