Mango

One of the most cultivated crops in the tropical area is planting mangos; mango cultivation came into Egypt during the era of Muhammad Ali in 1825 and expanded gradually throughout the ages until it became familiar as the rest of the fruits. Mango agriculture is centralized in the desert areas, especially in the following provinces Ismailia, El Sharkia, Giza, Fayoum, and Behiera. One of the plants that grow in Bariet-Shihiet is mangos, and the Monastery of Saint Mary El Syrian cultivates mangoes in an area of around 15 acres. The fruit mango is one of the classiest fruits, it is preferable to plant mangoes in March when the weather starts to warm up, to ensure successful growth, Mangoes can’t grow in low temperatures. It is recommended to plant windbreaks in new lands before planting mangos. If it is an open area it is recommended to plant the windbreaks in the four directions and the distance between one tree and the other should be 3 meters in the same row.

   Irrigation methods:

Water irrigation depends on the needs of the mango trees; it is noticeable that excess water irrigation would lead to problems.

It is worth mentioning that not a single irrigation program can fit all mango orchards, my personal experience and through the use of moisture sensors you can determine the appropriate time to irrigate trees and the first irrigation should be during the start of the growing season after adding the first batch of chemical fertilizer.

Drip irrigation is used in the new territories, make several bores next to the tree around three bores where each bore discharges 8 letters /hour, this will enable the tree to get around 60-70 liters / day.

The most important mango types are:
1 - Oweisi
2 - Taymoor
3 - Bairi
4 - Hindi
5 -Cabaneya
6 – Sweet Mango
7 - Alphonso
8 - the heart of the bull

12 - Mabrouka
13 – White sweet mango
14 - Fagry Klan

The Picking season & mangoes after collection:
Mangoes appear in the markets during the months July to October, after its complete growth during the period mid- June to mid-August. Season flowering extends to more than six weeks, and therefore fruits growth vary from one to another even on the same tree, therefore each fruit should be checked separately and fruit collection should be made at successive intervals.

One of the most important signs of mangoes complete growth are as follows:
1 - The fruit reaches its full size.
2 – The Fruit body is full
3 - For colored fruits, when final color appearance is reached.
4 - Pulp color should be yellow, light or shiny.
